Key Industry Sectors
The Hunter region is one of Australia’s largest and most diverse regional economies, supported by a strong mix of established and emerging industries. Mining and energy continue to be foundational pillars, contributing significantly to regional value added and underpinning the Hunter’s long-standing role as a major producer and exporter of resources. Ongoing investment in renewable energy zones, hydrogen hubs and clean‑energy precincts is reshaping this landscape, positioning the region as a future leader in zero‑emissions energy and advanced industrial capability.
Advanced manufacturing, defence and aerospace are also major strengths. The region hosts nationally important defence infrastructure, including RAAF Base Williamtown and the rapidly growing Astra Aerolab precinct, which together anchor a hub for aircraft sustainment, guided weapons, and broader defence manufacturing. The evolution from traditional heavy industry to high‑value advanced manufacturing is well underway, supported by strong research partnerships, specialised industrial land, and a skilled workforce that continues to adapt to new technologies and emerging supply chains.
Agriculture, viticulture and equine industries remain central to the Hunter’s identity and economy. The region produces cattle, milk, poultry and globally recognised thoroughbreds, accounting for around 80% of Australia’s stud horse exports. Viticulture and wine tourism, synonymous with the Hunter Valley, continue to draw national and international visitors, with wine, food, and nature‑based attractions contributing significantly to the region’s visitor economy and supporting a wide range of local businesses.
Services industries including health care, education, tourism, logistics and professional services make up an increasingly large share of employment and economic activity. Health care and social assistance is the region’s largest employer, while the University of Newcastle and the Hunter’s, research centres and innovation precincts are strengthening its position as a knowledge and technology hub. Combined with significant investments in airports, ports, and freight networks, these sectors are driving economic diversification and enabling the Hunter to compete globally while supporting a resilient local economy.
